Supporting Sustainable Mobility Behaviour Change: Bike Rail Integration Initiative

Arne Lindahl

Structural Issue Identified

Shifting everyday travel behaviour toward lower-carbon transport options remains a key challenge in climate policy. While cycling infrastructure and rail services are increasingly available, many people remain uncertain about how easily these modes can be combined in practice.

Behavioural barriers often arise from unfamiliarity with integrated travel options and a lack of visible examples demonstrating how multimodal travel works in everyday life.

What problem this work relates to

Transport decarbonisation strategies across Europe rely not only on infrastructure but also on behavioural change. Even where sustainable transport options exist, adoption can remain limited if people do not clearly understand how these options fit into daily travel routines.

Demonstrating practical examples of multimodal travel can help increase confidence and awareness around low-carbon transport choices.

Structural Adjustment & Implementation

I participated in a communications and outreach project connected to a collaboration between Brompton Bicycle and ScotRail promoting combined bike-and-rail travel in East Lothian.

The initiative aimed to demonstrate how cycling and rail can function together as part of everyday journeys, helping illustrate the practicality of multimodal sustainable transport.

Participation included appearing in promotional content highlighting how combined cycling and train travel can support more accessible low-carbon mobility.

Observable Effect

The initiative contributed to increased visibility of bike-and-rail integration as a viable transport option within the region. Projects of this type help illustrate how communication and real-world examples can support behavioural change alongside transport infrastructure.
