Increasing Volunteer Participation Through Local Media Visibility

Structural Issue Identified

The Prestonpans Beach Clean initiative operates along the East Lothian coastline and relies on volunteer participation to maintain regular clean-up activities. While the initiative had an established group of volunteers, maintaining consistent turnout and attracting new participants remained an ongoing challenge due to limited visibility beyond the existing volunteer network.

What problem this work relates to

Community-led environmental initiatives often depend on sustained volunteer engagement, yet participation levels can fluctuate when activities remain visible only to existing participants. Limited public awareness can reduce opportunities for new residents to become involved in local environmental stewardship.

Strengthening visibility and public narrative around community initiatives can support broader participation and reinforce collective environmental responsibility.

Structural Adjustment & Implementation

To increase awareness and encourage broader participation, I supported the initiative through local media engagement highlighting the work of volunteers and the environmental benefits of the beach clean activities.

The communications approach focused on presenting the initiative as an accessible community activity, emphasising the positive impact of volunteer participation and inviting wider local involvement in maintaining the coastline.

Observable Effect

Following increased media visibility, a subsequent beach clean event saw a noticeably higher turnout of volunteers compared with previous sessions. The increase in participation demonstrated how targeted local media engagement can strengthen community involvement in environmental initiatives.
