Structural Issue Identified

Public transport is positioned as a central mechanism within Swedish and regional climate policy. However, the effectiveness of transport systems depends not only on infrastructure provision, but on how systems function in practice for users across different environments.

What problem this work relates to

Climate policy frameworks at national, regional and municipal levels rely on increased public transport use to reduce emissions. Understanding how transport systems are experienced in practice is relevant to assessing how policy translates into everyday behaviour.

Structural Adjustment & Implementation

Conducted an independent field observation of bus route 171 between Norra Fäladen (Lund) and Malmö Sjukhus. The observation examined system interactions across municipal and regional boundaries, including:

1. Accessibility of stops and interchanges
2. Clarity of system navigation
3. Interaction between bus, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure

This was supported by a review of relevant policy frameworks across:

1. Swedish national climate targets
2. Region Skåne transport and climate strategy
3. Municipal level transport contexts

Observable Effect

The observation provides a grounded view of how public transport systems operate across governance levels, highlighting how system design, accessibility and user experience influence the practical uptake of transport policy objectives.
